An Employer Identification Number (EIN), also known as a Federal Tax Identification Number, is essential for businesses to operate legally in the United States. Issued by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), this unique nine-digit number is used to identify your business for tax purposes. Obtaining an EIN is a critical step when forming a company, especially when establishing an LLC or corporation.

Knowing the expected processing times for EIN applications is vital for business planning. While the IRS strives for efficiency, various factors can influence how quickly you receive your EIN. This guide outlines typical timelines and provides tips to expedite the process.

Online EIN Application: The Fastest Route

The most efficient way to obtain an EIN is through the IRS website. The online application is available Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Upon completing the online EIN request form, you should receive your EIN almost immediately.

However, note that online applications are generally limited to businesses located within the United States and its territories. International entities must use alternative methods.

Fax Application: A Slower Alternative

Businesses can also apply for an EIN by faxing Form SS-4 to the IRS. The processing time for faxed applications is typically around one week if a return fax number is included. If no return fax number is provided, the process may take up to two weeks.

The fax number to send applications to is (855) 641-6935.

Mail Application: The Lengthiest Option

Submitting your EIN application via mail is the slowest method. The processing time can take up to four weeks. Ensure you send the completed Form SS-4 to the following address:

Common Reasons for EIN Application Delays

Several factors can cause delays in obtaining your EIN:

Incomplete or inaccurate information on Form SS-4: Ensure all required fields are filled out correctly.

Applying from outside the United States: Online applications are not available for international entities.

Exceeding the daily EIN issuance limit: The IRS limits EIN issuance to one per responsible party per day.
