How to Obtain Your Tax Return Transcripts from the IRS
Learn the various methods for obtaining your tax return transcripts from the IRS, including online, by mail, and by phone. This guide provides step-by-step instructions for each option.
Tax return transcripts are essential documents that summarize your tax filings with the IRS. They provide a comprehensive overview of your tax information, including adjusted gross income (AGI), filing status, and reported income. Whether you need a transcript for loan applications, identity verification, or to amend a prior year's return, the IRS offers several convenient ways to obtain them.
Requesting Transcripts Online
The IRS's Get Transcript Online tool is the quickest way to access your tax return transcripts. This secure portal allows you to view, print, or download your transcripts immediately after verifying your identity.
To use the Get Transcript Online tool:
Visit the IRS website and navigate to the Get Transcript Online page.
Create an account or log in if you already have one. You'll need to verify your identity through Secure Access, which may involve providing personal information and answering security questions.
Select the type of transcript you need (e.g., Tax Return Transcript, Account Transcript).
Choose the tax year you're interested in.
View, print, or download your transcript.
Requesting Transcripts by Mail
If you prefer not to use the online tool, you can request transcripts by mail. The IRS offers two options for this:
Get Transcript by Mail: This is the simplest method. You can request a Tax Return Transcript or a Tax Account Transcript.
Form 4506-T: Use this form to request other types of transcripts, such as Wage and Income Transcripts (W-2s, 1099s).
Requesting Transcripts by Phone
You can also request a tax return transcript by phone. Call the IRS's automated transcript service at 800-908-9946.
Follow the prompts to verify your identity and specify the tax year and transcript type you need. The IRS will mail the transcript to your address of record, typically within 5 to 10 business days.
