How to Obtain Copies of Past Tax Returns
Need a copy of a previous tax return? The IRS provides several options, including online access, phone requests, and mail-in forms. Learn the steps to retrieve your tax transcripts and returns efficiently.
Accessing copies of your past tax returns is crucial for various reasons, from verifying financial information to amending past filings. The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) offers multiple avenues for taxpayers to obtain these records, ensuring you can get the documents you need.
This guide outlines the methods available for retrieving your tax returns and transcripts, providing clear steps to navigate the process efficiently.
Online Access via IRS.gov
The IRS's "Get Transcript Online" tool is the quickest way to access your tax transcripts. This online portal allows you to view, print, or download transcripts for various tax years.
To use this tool:
- Go to IRS.gov and click on the "Get Transcript Online" link.
- Create an account or log in if you already have one. You'll need to verify your identity through a secure access process.
- Select the type of transcript you need (e.g., Tax Return Transcript, Tax Account Transcript) and the relevant tax year.
- View, print, or download the transcript for your records.
Phone Request
You can request tax transcripts by phone. Call the IRS at 1-800-908-9946 and follow the automated prompts.
Be prepared to provide your Social Security number, date of birth, and address. The IRS will mail the requested transcript to your address of record.
Note that this method only provides transcripts, not full copies of your tax return.
Mail-In Request Using Form 4506-T
To request a tax transcript or a copy of your tax return by mail, complete and submit Form 4506-T, "Request for Transcript of Tax Return."
You can download Form 4506-T from the IRS website. Fill out all required information accurately, including the tax year(s) needed and your current address.
Mail the completed form to the address specified on the form, based on your state. The IRS will process your request and mail the transcript or return copy to you.
Important Considerations
Transcripts are generally available for the current year and the three previous tax years. For older returns, requesting a copy of the actual return may be necessary.
The IRS does not charge a fee for transcripts. However, there is a fee for copies of tax returns, typically around $43 per return.
Ensure your address is up-to-date with the IRS to avoid delays in receiving your requested documents.
